At Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface (CTSI), we know that applying for funding can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re juggling the day-to-day running of your organisation. We also know that it’s easy to get excited and start an application as soon as possible but preparation is key!
That’s why we’ve put together these practical tips designed to make the whole process easier and give you the best chance of securing the support you need.
1. Read the Guidelines Carefully
Before you start, take time to read the fund’s eligibility criteria and guidance notes. Make sure your project fits the fund’s priorities, this saves time and avoids disappointment later.
2. Tell Your Story Clearly
Funders want to understand the difference your project will make. Explain:
- Who will benefit (Keep it simple and avoid jargon, try write as if you’re explaining it to a friend.)
- What you want to do
- Why it matters
3. Show the need
Back up your application with evidence. This could be:
- Local statistics
- Feedback from your community
- Examples of demand for your service
4. Be Realistic with Your Budget
Break down your costs clearly and make sure they add up. If the fund allows, include a small contingency for unexpected expenses. If you’re asking for part funding, explain where the rest will come from.
5. Highlight Impact
Funders want to know what difference their money will make. Describe the outcomes you expect to make: how will lives improve? How will your community benefit? If possible, include measurable results.
6. Plan Ahead
Don’t leave it until the last minute! Give yourself time to gather documents, check details, and review your application. A rushed application often misses key information.
7. Set Yourself Up for Success
Funders want to know your organisation is well run. Good governance matters! Having clear policies, up-to-date accounts, and strong leadership can make a big difference.
At CTSI, we offer governance support for our members, including help with governing documents and policies. Get in touch with us for advice.
8. Ask for Help
If you’re unsure about anything, contact the funder or a local support organisation. Many funds have advisers who are happy to answer questions and CTSI is here to help too!
