Independent Custody Visiting Scotland
Are you interested in becoming a volunteer?
You must be over 18 with no direct involvement in the criminal justice system – serving police officers or special constables are not eligible. Solicitors or probation officers may also be excluded to prevent possible conflict of interests for the individual. This maintains the independence of the scheme as a whole.
Is custody visiting for you?
We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds and sections of the community.
No special skills are required as full training and support is given. Custody visitors should be good listeners, non-judgemental, unprejudiced and impartial and have an interest in the community and the welfare of the people detained in police custody.
How do I apply?
There is a two stage application process.
Complete and submit an application form and the equality monitoring form (optional). Please read the application guidance document prior to completing the application form.
If you are eligible you?ll be invited to an information day, normally held on a Saturday. By attending this you will have a deeper insight into what is involved and you?ll also have the opportunity to meet one of our volunteers. You will gain a sound knowledge and thorough understanding of detainees? rights and police responsibilities.
If you wish to proceed with your application you will attend a short, informal interview. If successful you then attend a training day consisting of practical and theoretical exercises covering all aspects of custody visiting. This is complemented by a set of guidelines and the basic principles of a detainee?s legal rights and entitlements.
All newly appointed independent custody visitors are paired with an experienced visitor for their six month probationary period. Appointments are usually made for a three-year period, which may be renewable.
All volunteers are issued with an official identity card which you must use when carrying out visits.
